Duties and Responsibilities


1. Customer Service: Provide timely, polite, and respectful internal and external customer service regardless of the circumstances, must remain calm, flexible, and willing to see other perspectives. Provide recognition and support to volunteers for their individual contributions to our agency. Assure that every individual who enters our agency is recognized and treated as a potential donor.

2. Disease Control: Implement infection prevention and shelter sanitation protocol to assure that all animal holding areas, supplies, and equipment are cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis in a thorough and timely manner. Assure good disease control practices by following protocol for the timely removal of physically or behaviorally ill animals as well as maintaining foot baths, following hand washing protocol, and wearing appropriate protective clothing when handling ill animals. Assure good disease & safety control practices by following hand washing and good housekeeping protocol.

Management of Disease in Shelter Animals

Rare Occurrences of Disease in a Population of Animals

Reduced Risk of Customer, Volunteer and Employee Accidents

Compliance with CHHS Inspections


3. Animal Handling: Remain current in humane animal husbandry and handling. Assure that animals in all holding areas are provided with the appropriate supplies and enrichment to enhance their lives while in the care of CHHS. Work collaboratively with other shelter departments to continuously improve the level of care provided to the animals in the care of CHHS.

Decreased Stress in Shelter Animals

Rare Occurrence of Disease Outbreak in a Population of Animals

Increased Live Release Rate

Compliance with CHHS Inspections


4. Training: Participate in staff training and development opportunities and cross training programs as needed.


Measures of Accomplishment:





This position requires a high degree of flexibility. A respect for the human animal bond is a must. Must have the ability to exercise good judgment and make independent decisions with limited supervision.



Should prefer and have the ability to cope with physically and emotionally demanding work.


Work Conditions

May work in area with high noise level, foul odors, and challenging customers. Physical requirements for the position include standing, walking, lifting (50lbs), carrying (50lbs), pushing (50lbs), pulling (50lbs), climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching overhead, handing, seeing, depth perception, and color vision.


Work Hours

Typical work hours are 6:00am-12pm (when operating at full capacity) four days per week; weekends and holidays required. Work hours may be extended as necessary to include special adoption events, trainings, or meetings.

Major Functions

The major function of a Kennel Technician is to provide safe, humane, and thorough care for animals housed at the Caring Hands Humane Society. This includes sanitizing, cleaning, observing and recording health and behavior.
