Volunteer Appreciation Day - 2009

Every volunteer makes a difference and when you add it all up, you get - well… THE MOST LIVES SAVED IN ANY YEAR TO DATE! Dec 20th 2009 we held Volunteer Appreciation Day to honor all of our Volunteers and Foster Home Volunteers. We selected four volunteers who have inspired the whole Caring Hands community for special awards. Those recognized included: Mikaleigh Wilson, Ginger Resnick, Ken Jackson and Zoa Rowlinson.

Angela Clifton, 2009 Volunteer Coordinator, said this about Mikaleigh:

"When I first meet this young lady I thought “oh my” will she ever stop asking questions?  Well the answer is no, and that’s what has put this youth volunteer out shining above the rest.

She has almost perfect attendance, always wearing a smile asking what am I allowed to do.  This young lady participates faithfully, she is here for our monthly dog wash events, our Pets Smart Adoption outings, the Taste of Newton dog treats the preparing, making and packaging of the treats.  And if that wasn’t enough she even made the treats at home and donated them back to us for the event."

When asked Mikalaeigh said this about volunteering at CHHS. "I love volunteering because I can be around the things I love most and I can help them at the same time."

We felt we had to recognize Ken Jackson because he is one of those people who is invovled in so many ways - although he is so quiet that much of the time you wouldn't even notice him. Except he has a nack for being there when he is needed most! There have been dogs that we just didn't have the resources to work with here. With his persistance and gentle leadership he has turned these dogs around. Some he has worked with here and some he has fostered - opening not only his heart, but his home. Thanks Ken!

Ginger Resnick is a board member, the offsite event coordinator, a foster home volunteer and one of the most tireless animal advocates that we have ever met. If there is an animal in need she will not rest until that animal has been saved and is always there encouraging the rest of us to go the extra mile. Her passion is contagious and she doesn't know the meaning of the word defeat. She truly exemplifies the saying, where there is a will there is a way. She is one of the best friends companion animals have.

And we quite literally cannot say enough good things about Zoa Rowlinson! She started out volunteering for us and was signed on as a foster home in no time. She has ben invovolved in almost every type of volunteer activity available. Best of all she recently decided to turn pro and accepted the position of Volunteer Coordinator at Caring Hands! Who better to lead the program than a former volunteer!

Father Eric Anderson of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, presided over the 4th annual blseeing of the Pets at Caring Hands Humane Society, which is always held on on near St. Francis Day. Saint. Francis is the Patron St. of Animals.

Father Anderson, blessed all the animals here as well as pets brought in to be blessed by members of the community. Father Anderson is himself an animal lover, particularly horses and dachsunds.

July 17th - Newton Chamber of Commerce, Chamber Breakfast

Caring Hands hosted the Chamber Breakfast for the month of July. We were proud to give a presentation on the progress that Caring Hands has made since 2000 and since our last presentation at the Chamber in 2005. In 2002, with a small operating budget, we were able to save only 25% of adoptable animals. In 2008, with more space, a staff that has more than doubled, an operating budget that has more than quadrupled, and the generous support of our community we saved 2/3rds of adoptable Cats and almost 85% of adoptable dogs. In 2009 we've had our best year-to-date ever.

We have pushed back the seasonal loss of life significantly this year. Our current resources are fully committed at this point, however. In order to sustain this save rate, we will need significant help in the next three months - especially Foster Homes.

We would like to thank the Foster Homes who signed on in the first half of this year, our Volunteers and Junior Volunteers, Members and Donors and especially the Force Sisters Endowment, the Frank & Mary Wilson Endowment and the Betty Graham Charitable Trust for the progress we have been able to make this year. This year has been a real step forward towards the goal of No-Kill!
