And Thanks for Saving a Life!

Max
Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know how "Max" the Bearded Collie is doing in his new Massachusetts home. He has settled in wonderfully and we just adore him. We found that he loves to walk in the woods behind our house, as well as at the park. We also discovered that he loves to swim! He has impeccable manners and is just an all-around joy to have around. He bonded with us from the start & it's hard to believe that he's only been here a month. As you can see in the pictures his coat is growing in beautifully with lots of curls and colors. We can't thank you guys enough for helping us find him. He is the perfect guy for us!

Rider
This is Rider on his 3rd day working birds and enjoying every minute of it. Rider has been a joy ever since we picked him up at CHHS. He seemed to know when we arrived that he was being taken home. He has worked out really well with our other two dogs and two cats. He loves to sit and watch the cats but learned quickly not to get too close. So far nothing in the back yard is sacred as he takes everything to his stash point so we affectionately call him our junk yard dog. He is a extremely fun and loving dog to our family and we give thanks to Caring Hands for giving him the true care and love that he deserves. I look forward to our first hunt together.

Socks
Here is a photo of "Socks" taken in August after his 1st year birthday. In August he weighed 17lbs. & is an adorable funny kitty. We call him our "laugh a day" at least cat. As you can see in the photo he is very happy & content in his "forever" home with us. Tigger, his house mate are getting along real well, except for an almost daily "sparring" match which is pretty entertaining to watch. He is so happy to be able to look out our windows to see what Mother Nature is offering fun to watch @ that time. In spite of his weight/size, he is very light footed when he decides to bless me with his presence @ the foot of my bed. Sometimes I don't even know he is there until I get up & he greets me as only he can do. Thanks for the wonderful care that he rec'd when he was in your care there in Newton. Blessings to you, the entire staff & all the animals you take care & hope they all find wonderful, caring homes in the near future.

Buddy
[Note from the webmaster: Buddy was first rescued form a breeding operation by Kansas Animal Health Dept. then brought to our facility. We transferred him to a GREAT Cairn Terrier rescue called Colonel Potter in order to get him out of the stressful shelter environment and into a place where he could recover from his experience under the best care possible from people who thoroughly understand his breed. His adopter was kind enough to include us in the update and graciously allowed us to share this story.]
Attached are a couple of pictures of my little guy. His name is Buddy and he came to me 9 months ago from Colonel Potter. They happened to have fostered Buddy for a number of months [after] he came from your shelter. He now socializes with a resident female he just adores. I have a fenced yard that is on more than one acre and he loves ‘squirreling’ daily. He has no interest in leaving the yard unless it is to go his for 2 mile daily walk. He has more than enough territory to patrol and keep "marked".
Buddy exhibits such a love for life and he has certainly livened our family. He is so sweet and even tempered and loves to play and beg for belly scratches. Buddy is still a little timid but he looks to his sister for guidance on who to trust. Buddy has problems maintaining his weight because he runs free in the yard constantly. This time of year we have to increase his feed. He has a goofy little smile and talks constantly giving us the wu-wu-wu speech telling us how happy his is to be free of neglect and abuse! Buddy wants to give you all big sloppy kisses and snuggles!!
I wanted to let the people know at Caring Hands Human Society that I appreciate the work that you do. If it weren't for people like you guys, the abuse would continue!
Pass on my thanks and blessings to all at the Newton facility!!!
Gayla
[Note from the webmaster: We want to thank you too Gayla – and the people at Colonel Potter! Lives are saved one at a time, and this is a great example of working together to make ‘happily ever after’ come true!]

Sherlock Bones
We still own Sherlock Bones (previously Romeo - that also fits him!) He is a really great dog and I think he is happy with us too. It was a great match. He loves to play outside though he is also an inside dog. I work at home and he gets along well with our cat, Lucky, so he always has part of the "pack" around. He is a very well tempered, well mannered little schnauzer with a lot of personality. He has no health or behavioral problems. I think you guys do a great job.
Sue
Juno
I wanted to take a minute to give you an update on our dog that we adopted from your center last fall. We adopted Juno after searching very hard for the perfect dog to fit into our family. We have a 3 year old daughter and a 2 year old Schipperke.
When we adopted Juno, she was in pretty poor shape. She had been on the move for quite some time as evidenced by her very, very thin frame and her very sore and worn out paws. Juno also had gingivitis that made it very difficult for her to eat. She was very quiet and reserved but immediately became a loved member of our family.
Today, Juno has gained approximately 10 pounds. Her coat is beautiful and she shows her personality constantly. We did find out that Juno is a Samoyed. She shares many of the Sammy qualities including her unmistakable smile and characteristic singing (bark/howl mix) when she is excited.
Juno has especially bonded with our daughter who calls Juno her best friend. Thank you so much for allowing us the opportunity to bring Juno into our family. She is an amazing animal and we love her so much! I especially want to thank you Lori for recommending her to us. I had been emailing you back and forth for probably a year trying to find the right fit. You were right, Juno is it!
Attached are a couple of photos of her lounging in our backyard.
Thanks again,
Kendra

Polar
Hi, my name is Jeremiah and our family adopted Polar (AKA Corbin) in November.
He has done very well adapting to his new home and gets a long great with his twin Angel. Although Angel is a Bichon/Chihuahua mix and is 90 lbs lighter and gets lost in his fur at sometimes. We have been pleasantly surprised with his training or I should say the lack of training we had to do. He has not made a mess in the house and he gets to roam free protecting his home all hours of the day.
Polar is a bit of a trash digger and all attempts to keep him out of the trash have failed. I'm not sure if it is sister Angel talking him into it since she was the trash digger before Polar came into the house. He enjoys howling at fire trucks along with the Huskies two blocks down and we have a fire station 1/2 mile away.
Polar is now up to just over 100 lbs and thinks he is a lap dog. I have found him sleeping in my 6 year old sons bed with him and he likes to climb into our bed when we are not around. Being a Great Pyrenees he loves the snow and will take hour long naps outside no matter how cold it gets.
We gave the polar bear a bath just yesterday and brushed him. We had a pile of his hair stacked up to his belly so we are not looking forward to April when they are known to blow there coat.
Polar has been a great addition to our family and we thank all of you at caring hands for helping us find our very own polar bear.
Jeremiah

The Queen of Sheba
Sorry for the delay as the holiday had us traveling. Sheba (Queen of Sheba) loves to travel and more or less is fast becoming The dog of the house.
The cat doesn't notice her as a dog and just several days ago the cat was about to pounce Sheba and did a last minute tail flick to avoid the dog and walked away like nothing happened. We laughed lots over that incident.
Our vet has been helping rid Sheba of puppy farm prison maladies... the dog is a trooper and is gaining on all fronts!
The toughest part is that she is still learning what it is to be a dog. So sad that she was put through such ordeals.
Best of all she knows what it is to want to go outside to do her potty business. She is in a pattern and hasn't missed, or messed up yet. The past week she has graduated to sleeping on the bed all through the night and in the mornings she tries to be very very small to avoid the get up and go outside routine. I believe she is a Florida dog deep down inside as much as she dislikes the cold.
We have been discussing the possibility of another Cavalier to help teach her about a dog's life. If an adoptable King Charles Cavalier shows up suited to the task please contact us.
Best to you in the new year! Thanks so much for Sheba.
Eric

Jag
I have had Jag for 10 months now. At first he was a handful. He loved his looooooooooooong walks in the woods so when he didn't get his daily four hour walk he'd get PO'd. As soon as the door opened he'd shoot out not to be seen again for a few hours.
I finally have him trained and he is the best dog I've had for many years. I have enclosed a few pics of him.
Chip
Note from the webmaster: Chip adopted Jag a while ago and recently sent this happy adopter story from Afghanistan after he got our online newsletter! Wow, thanks Chip! PS: Jag is being cared for by Chip's loved ones until he can return. Let's all remember to keep the troops and support staff in hearts and thoughts - and to help give them and their pets the support they deserve!
Chip - we wish you a safe and happy return!
Marley
Hi! My name is Lisa and I adopted a little tan and white peke with a broken jaw named Carley from you in August. We named her Marley and I wanted to share with you how she is doing.
At her last well vet visit she weighed 10 1/2 lbs. She is a very spoiled little princess. She has a huge yard to play in, a warm bed, lots of toys, lots of treats and has the run of the house. She is very loved and spoiled.
I think my husband spoils her more than anyone else and its cute how he talks to her when he is giving her ear scratches. Marley is house broken and leash trained now. She is afraid of stairs but was more afraid of thunderstorms and ends up in bed with my husband and I during them. But she will not go down the stairs so I have to carry her.
She wags her tail all the time and even "talks" to me. When I leave, I leave the tv on and she watches cartoons. When I get home she and my other Peke Max greet me and tell me how much they missed me. They are the best of friends. She is very sweet. Everyone who meets her just fall in love with her and when I tell them her story they just love her even more. She loves going for rides in the car and goes to the groomer once a month for her spa day. The vet gave her a clean bill of health and she does not need to return until her check up next Aug.
Little Marley has been an inspiration and we couldn't imagine life without her. She even smiles for pictures which i have sent from my phone in another email. We are getting ready for our first road trip to Wyoming for Thanksgiving. I would be in trouble if I went home without her and Max!
Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago we lost one of our four legged family members. Betty was a black lab chow mix that was dumped at our house as a puppy and we had her about three years. It was a hard loss for all of us, but not as much as it was for my step-son who cared for Betty.
I will be looking at adopting another dog for him for Christmas. I think we will keep with that tradition. I believe in giving credit where it is due and I want to tell you how I appreciate everything all of you do for these babies. It takes really special people with big hearts. I share with everyone I talk to how these animals need homes and how sad it is that they are waiting to just be loved and how important it is to have owner responsibility. I hope that with everyone I tell little Marley's story to, if just one person chooses to adopt, I have helped as well. Marley is an adorable little girl and she is very loved by all of us. I want to thank you for allowing me the privilege to have Marley in my life.
May God bless all of you special people and help those in need of homes find a loving one very soon.
Take care,
Lisa

Bella
Dear Director & Staff of Caring Hands,
I just want to say a big thank you! Christy was our counselor and helped us to adopt "Cady" now called "Bella" last Friday. She is an outstanding addition to your staff-so knowledgable and friendly.
Your staff gives A+ service, your facilities are very clean and your volunteer staff is very impressive. We travelled back to Texas with Bella and she has kept us laughing with her silly puppy curiousity and adorable disposition.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for helping us to find Bella and thank you for all the wonderful pets you help.
The picture is of our beautiful Bella with our daughter Kelli.
Sincerely,
Denise and Stan

Lucy
We are an older couple raising a young child. We had an unfortunate experience with another adopted dog from another facility and had to return him. It was a difficult decision and Bethany missed the companionship of a pet.
We had looked for a boxer and when we heard about Lucy we immediately called Caring Hands and came to visit her. She had been found on the streets, was thin and frightened, but Bethany instantly bonded with her and we took her home. What a wonderful decision that was. She is such a good dog and has become part of our family. She travels with us, plays with our other grand-dogs, and has become a wonderful friend to Bethany who calls her “her sister”.
We couldn’t be happier and, knowing that she is an older boxer, we only hope that we can make the rest of her life really special. We are so grateful to Caring Hands for rescuing this beautiful lady and for the good care that she received while with them.
Thank you for all you do,
Way, Becky, Bethany, and Lucy
Trixie
Hi!
I adopted Trixie February 15, 2010. She was listed as 12 yrs. old, although the vet's opinion is that she is a senior, but not that far along in age. She is absolutely the best!
I had never had a pet (other than a few fish), so I had no idea what to expect. She was obviously well-loved and very well trained. And, I do believe she was a "little" spoiled, although, I think it's just
that she knows what she likes and doesn't like. She is wonderful with all my nieces and nephews, they occasionally visit and they all love Trixie. She has three best friends next door, a miniature Rat Terrier Mix, and two miniature Daschund mixes. The neighbors love Trixie and treat her as one of their own. If I'm gone in the evenings, she often goes over for playtime.
She's also impressed several people, my landlord thinks she is the best dog I could have possibly adopted. An employee of the electric company fell in love with her this spring, I was out walking a couple of weeks ago, saw her driving down the street and she stopped to ask about Trixie! Even mail carriers love her!
Trixie loves to go for walks, her ears perk up and she gets so happy when she sees me with her leash! She sits but can barely stay still long enough for me to put her leash on! Trixie also loves her squeaky toys, we play catch indoors and out every day. She loves running in the park, to me that is when she is in her element, her head held high and proud, she takes off like a lightening bolt! It's an awesome sight. She has taught me so much!
Thank you so much for allowing me to adopt Trixie, she is one of the best things in my life!

Annie aka: Angel
Also, see Annie's entry towards the
bottom of this page!
I wanted to send a couple of pictures to show you how well Angel is doing. We've called her Annie since adopting her aprox. 3 yrs ago. She becomes a puppy again when we blow bubbles or if she sees a balloon.
I know you adopt out a lot of animals, so just to give you some history; I had gotten an email that was circulating, and finally got to me. The email was asking to save "Angel", as she had chronic ear infections and was what was thought to be about 10 years old. The email indicated she may possibly be put down, as she was considered unadoptable. Not wanting that to happen, I decided to drive to Newton, from Wichita, and get her, having only seen her picture.
After bringing her home, she was immediately put on a Jenny Craig diet for dogs, and has some of her girlish figure back, although she's still overweight. Annie/Angel is a very sweet, gentle dog.
Sincerely,
Donna

Kado & Maximus
Dear CHHS,
I adopted Max (our cat) and Kado (our dog) at the same time. Kado took to us right away....and my husband...well, it was love at first sight with Kado! He likes to take him for rides and hopes to soon take him camping. He is a daddy's boy!! So....if momma isn't around when he is chasing the ducks...he gets away with it!!
Kado loves Sage (our other dog) and she loves him. They love the bones they get regularly! They are also very good at letting us know if something strange is lurking around!
As for Max...he is a momma's boy! It took two months for him to stop hiding all the time. Now...he cuddles up with me every night! And because he is a Main Coon (a very large cat)...when he kneeds on me it feels like I'm getting a back massage! BONUS!!!
He loves to snuggle and give kisses. And while I get ready for work every morning...he makes sure to love on me the whole time so that I will think about him while I'm gone. Lol I am very happy with our new family members and I think they are happy with us.
These guys can't TELL us their feelings...but like us...they feel lonely and sad and they just want to be loved just like we do!
Thank you Caring Hands for all that you do!!
Kado and Max want to thank you too. They are very happy with their home.
Susan, Kado & Maximus

Pinto
To My Humane Society Family,
I wanted to send you an update on how I am doing in my New Life, and my New Family!
It has been an adjustment. I am not used to the New Freedom, and have tested my family, but they understand and are patient with me.
My feline siblings are also adjusting - one better than the other. ;-)
I am having to go outside on a leash with one parent for the time being until they get a new gate up. They plan to do that in the next few weeks. They had planned to do that before I came, but did not know how fast they would find me!
I am slowly learning manners. I have almost mastered 'sit.' I need to learn 'stay' and 'come.' I also have to learn to eat dog food not cat food. I went to the vet Thursday after I came home and they said I am doing well with health.
All in all I am doing well, and one of the best things I do is cuddle either in a parent's arm or under covers. I like to sleep between my parents under covers. I take up the bed, and it's a California King bed!
I will make a visit to you in the future. Thank you and I hope all the animals are as lucky as I have been!
Love,
Pinto...(With help from my Mommy!)

Ginger
I like my dog Ginger! My name is Tommy. We call her snappy wappy. I got her for my 8th birthday. I had tears of Joy. She is really cool! We're going to have a doggy birthday for Ginger with a dog cake. I really love her
Tommy
We are so pleased with Ginger. We couldn't have asked for a sweeter dog. We recently had her 1 year birthday party, we had 6 dogs attend!! Gracie
(the other dog at our house) and Ginger are just best friends. She was a great addition to our family. Thank you!
Megan (aka Mom)

Miss Mattie
I have been wanting to send you pictures of Miss Mattie and to let you know
that we are getting along very well.
Mattie and our Bichon Frise-Poodle, Buddy, do just about everything together they play in the fenced yard, try to take each others rawhide bones, and
they both enjoy their toys with squeakers inside.
Buddy was easy to train
because Mattie "showed him the ropes" as my wife Kathy says.
Please forward this (or show it to) Mattie's foster parent, too. I know that she loved Mattie, and I appreciate all the care and training that she did for
Mattie.
Thank you so much for the service that you do in truly caring for the
animals who come to you, and in helping people like us find pets to love.

Danger and Houdini
It started long before Danger and Houdini…That is our love for dogs. We adopted Shadow at age 6. At the time he was flea infested, his anal glands were clogged and he had no hair on his legs as he had scratched the fur off. After weeks of slathering his legs with ointments and bandages, freeing him from the fleas, having him expressed and getting his allergies under control he became our spiritual advisor and best friend for the next 13 years. He was with us when we moved to Lawrence while mama attended grad school. He was with us when daddy was diagnosed with and treated successfully for cancer and through the four months of hard recovery after the surgery and he was with us when mama started a new job.
At age 19 Shadow’s vision was failing, hearing lost (as evidenced by a very pleasant 4th of July with no Shadow panic attacks from the fireworks) and he had a few accidents in the house. On the morning of March 4, 2008 Shadow went outside to “do his business,” stumbled up the steps, jumped up on our sectional and became nonresponsive. He went to heaven that day. We were a sad set of parents.
Flash forward to 8 months later – November 2008. Long story short, we saw Danger (then Ranger) on the Caring Hands website and were immediately smitten. After making arrangements to adopt we went to Pet Smart to finalize the adoption. But no Danger! He had been left at the Newton shelter. But then in strutted Houdini (then Junior). We looked at each other and decided immediately that we had room for two. So we asked the shelter staff to hold onto Hoodie while we drove to Newton to get Danger.
The boys immediately adjusted to our bungalow styled home and big back yard. During our first summer together we took them everywhere – camping, to the river, to human parties, and on long walks through parks and bicycle trails. We have frequently urged our friends to bring their dogs over and have had up to five doggies running around and socializing. They round out our lives and make coming home the best part of our day!

Abby
After losing our 13-year-old Siberian Husky, Leia, last summer, we felt so bad we weren’t sure we wanted another dog. But in early February 2010, we met Abby (formerly Sunflower) at the Caring Hands Humane Society and we fell in love with her right away. I’ve already taken lots of pictures and have all kinds of stories of the cute things she does, but I’d just like to share a few of her stories & pictures here.
When Abby first came home, it must have been quite a change for her. She’d spent her first two
years as a mother for a breeder, and she obviously wasn’t used to being in a house or playing with toys or being walked on a leash. At our house, she pranced around on the carpet like it felt really good on her feet, and she was fascinated with the t.v. Then we gave her a dog bed which immediately became “hers.” She still isn’t too crazy about toys. The squeaky ones scare her. But she learned very quickly that the leash means “go for a walk!” We do that every day, and there’s no getting out of it. She’s a great exercise partner because she’s never not in the mood.
Having been around lots of other animals before, she gets along fine with our two cats. She also plays well with other dogs at the dog park, and she likes meeting other dogs when we go for walks.
The best stories, though, have nothing to do with the adjusting she’s been through. Abby is a real sweetheart and she’ll cuddle and she’ll come to us for more and more petting. She loves meeting guests and meeting people on walks, especially kids. She plays hard, too. She went absolutely nuts playing in our backyard in the snow. Also, one evening she was running really fast laps around the living room while I sat on the floor. I got dizzy just watching her. Finally she stopped and sat down facing me, and her eyes just slowly closed - while she was still sitting up! She’s also smart and is learning a few tricks like “shake,” “high five” and “roll over.”
It’s no doubt that Abby is a keeper. She’s our best buddy and we’re looking forward to lots of years with her. We’d like to thank Caring Hands for bringing her to us and for taking such good care of her.

Sissy Sue
Friends at Caring Hands-
On March 12, 2010, my new momma, Janice Jones, adopted me. At that time my name was Cotton, now she calls me "Miss Sissy Sue". I can honestly say, I was really scared on the way to Wichita. I didn't have a clue who these people were. Momma wrapped me in a blanket to keep me warm, and they kept talking to me and loving me and were really nice to me.
When we got to my new home, momma took me to the backyard to do my business. Wow, what a big yard. I can't wait until it warms up, so I can play outside. My new yard has a privacy fence, a little pond and all kinds of room to run and play. Then we went into the house to meet my new sister, Maddie Mae. She's a Shih Tzu and at times she's a little stuck up, but I think we really hit it off.
I was so excited, I didn't know what to do. Maddie and I ran through the house, like our tails were on
fire. Then mom let me explore my new home. I've got all kinds of room to roam around. However, I did have a couple of accidents that afternoon, but momma was very patient with me and I haven't done it again. Can you believe it, she even lets me sleep with her and Maddie.
Momma takes me and Maddie our every couple of hours. I thinks she's afraid I might poop again. Anyway, when we come in, Maddie and I run through the house and play with toys. Maddie has a basket full of really cool toys that make weired squeaky sounds.
I have seen more new things this week. It seems like mom is always doing laundry, dusting and running the sweeper. Of course, I think she needs help, so I'm right there with her. I'm not sure whose more wasted afterwards, her to me. But, after the house is clean, we sit ad watch HGTV. And, guess where I'm at? Right on mom's lap.
I just wanted to let you all know, how much I appreciated you taking such good care of me while I was at Caring Hands. But, I've got a really nice home and people that really love me. I'm finally home and it's "My Forever Home".
Love,
Sissy Sue

Cricket
Recently in late January we received 42 dogs from Kansas Animal Health Dept. These dogs had been seized from a breeding operation. We are pleased to say that we have been VERY successful in rehoming these dogs thanks to the big hearts of the community we serve, who came forward in record numbers to offer them forever homes! Cricket was on Below is Cricket's story. Cricket was one of those 42 dogs. She now lives with Loralee. Here is their story...
I am writing to let Caring Hands know how Cricket (previously Tuttle) is doing in our home! My own Pomeranian had recently died a few months prior and I had been half heartedly looking around to adopt another Pom. When I saw on the nightly news that many of the dogs seized were Pomeranians, I knew I had to go check them out for myself. I fell in love with several of them, but knew I only needed one. I chose Cricket, a 2 year old beautiful black Pom with a white muzzle and her ears tipped in white as well. I was able to pick her up Feb. 2nd, 2010 and it was an exciting day for everyone!
She was scared and very nervous of everything- including the wind blowing the leaves across the grass. She started becoming more active and much more happy. We have decided to keep her on canned food, as it seems she enjoys it much more than anything else. She also started playing with her squeaky toys and running around the house so fast we've nick-named her 'greased lightening'. She is a blur of happiness, speed, and activity.
It's heartwarming to once again have barking in the house again. We really missed having a dog. She now rides in the car with me every morning to drop off the kids and run errands.
Housebreaking is still ongoing. It's a slow progress, as she has been used to relieving herself in her kennel and sleeping in it from her former life as a puppy mill brood. Fortunately, I have a lot of patience, and we have been very gently teaching her indoor etiquette- only raising our voices to show displeasure- NEVER our hands. We've had her about 5 weeks now, and I am pleased to say that she no longer uses her own kennel as her toilet and is starting to grasp the concept of "indoor/outdoor" activities.
I know we have a ways to go yet, but I feel confident she's going to have perfect indoor manners. She tries hard to please and be a good girl and just wants loving attention. I feel very blessed to have Cricket and I wanted to thank everyone - all the workers and the volunteers at Caring Hands Humane Society who helped me and talked with me and spent so much time with me assuring that I was getting the right dog for my family. No one tried to hurry me along, even though the building was VERY busy with other people looking for dogs as well. I had wonderful helpers directing me to a room, answering questions and checking in with me every few minutes. I could not have asked for more caring people who genuinely loved what they were doing. Thank you Caring Hands!
Loralee and Cricket :)

Molly (Previously Sally)
Molly was rescued by Kansas Animal Health Dept. and brought to Caring Hands Humane Society last July. When we adopted her, she was timid and didn't like men. In fact she was not use to the out side at all. [Having previously been] Living in a home with dozens of other dogs, she felt the need to get a mouthful of food and go off to eat it, and wouldn't warm up to our other animal members.
Wow has she has come such a long way in her new home! She loves my husband and son now. She loves her walks and exploring the outside now she knows she's coming back home. She loves running through the doggie door to play outside in the snow and the grass and has finally warmed up to our other animals.
She observes what our Japanese Chin does so she can be a good girl too. She sits in the front window waiting for us to come home and is giving out her kisses freely. She tries so hard to do the right thing which makes it seem like she's been a family member much longer than the 8 joyful months we've had.
I want to thank Lori for communicating so well during the adoption process and for the foster family who nursed Molly and her pups prior to our adoption. The foster family were so open for our visits.
The adoption process was our best experience yet!
Sheri
Oakland

On November 28th 2009 I adopted Oakland (formerly Cola) from CHHS after losing my Best Friend George (my Boxer) on November 22nd.
I wanted to get Raider (my other Cat that I adopted in early Nov. as a companion for George) a new friend when I saw Oakland I knew he was the one!
He is the most loveable cat in the world with a purr louder than ever.
Watching him grow has been a blessing! I don't feel like I adopted Oakland And Raider as much as they have adopted me!
Thank you to the staff at Caring Hands Humane Society for doing what you do!

Lottie's Story

To all those who remember "Lottie" (adopted 10/2):
Thought you might like some pictures of how she looks now. You would hardly recognize her. She has undergone quite a transformation since we've had her.
She has gotten back to her normal weight. She had a tapeworm which manifested itself the end of Oct. When I took her to the vet for that she said she weighed 7 lbs, 11 ounces and if she got over 8 I would have to start rationing her! She was eating about a bowl a day, but thankfully has cut back to about half that since she reached her normal weight and got rid of the tapeworm.
I don't know if it's because she's getting her winter coat, recovering from the effects of motherhood & surgery, eating Science Diet, less stressed or got rid of the tapeworm (probably some of each), but she is turning into a beautiful cat. The coarse, dry, dull, charcoal gray coat (that had dandruff) that she had when we got her has gradually turned into the lustrous, soft, silky, plush double coat with the silver sheen that a Russian Blue is supposed to have, much to our delight. The lighter undercoat makes her look more medium gray in most light. This is making us wonder even more if she is a purebred. She didn't fit the CFA standards very well, but I knew other countries had bred for different traits. After doing some research she seems to fit the British standards pretty well, with a few from the CFA, like the silver tips. The main area she doesn't fit either is in her eyes. They are yellow green instead of vivid green, but I have also read that the eye color is one of the hardest traits to maintain.
She has enough RB to make us happy, especially her personality. We're so glad we took her. She needed a home like ours where both of us are at home a lot of the time because she loves to be petted and played with, and she would like even more than we can give her! But it is a good thing she likes to be petted, because her "new" coat makes it almost irresistible to pet
her. She welcomes us home and when we get up, meowing to be petted. After
she got rid of the tapeworm, her playful side started coming out more, which is also an RB trait.
We had to take a week long trip the 1st part of Nov and she did great. Neither the neighbor who checked on her or we noticed that she did anything out of the ordinary while we were gone. That's important, because we do take several long trips a year. Unlike our previous cat, she wanted the neighbor to pet her. It's amazing how friendly she is. With all of the things that have happened to her, you would think she wouldn't trust anybody. We were afraid she would feel abandoned again when we went on our trip.
She's such a nice, well-behaved cat that we have a hard time believing anyone would have abandoned her, especially if she is a purebred.
I still wonder if she wasn't an elderly person's cat and something happened to them, and whoever took care of their affairs didn't want to be bothered with even taking her to the shelter and just left her to fend for herself.
RB's would be a good companion for an elderly person, and there were several things about her behavior that made me think she was used to being around someone elderly.
Thank you for all you do to make these kind of happy stories possible.

Love Never Leaves - Mariah's Story

A Note From the Webmaster:
Dear viewers and friends of Caring Hands Humane Society,
Charlene and Mariah were kind enough to send us this letter. For me personally, it came an important time. As we strive for no kill, it is easy to dwell on the ones we could not save in the past - instead of focusing on creating happy endings in the here and now. Mariah and Chalrene's story reminded me why I come into work every day - becasue of the incredible bond between us as humans and the companion animals we love and who love us in return.
Mariah, spent a long time at Caring Hands Humane Society until she went to Colorado on the Rescue Waggin. This is the story of what happened after that...
November 9 2009
Boulder Valley Humane Society, Rescue Waggin and Caring Hands Humane Society
All of you knew me as Sweety (Sweet Dee Selley) a nine month old lab mix. On Sept. 19th I came to Caring Hands needing a better home cuz I was left alone 8 hours a day and all night on the back porch. I also chewed everything. (Duh – I was SO bored besides being a puppy!)
Well, I just wanted to thank all of you for helping me find a new home and give you an update. On Oct. 15th a lady stopped by my window and read my card. As usual I jumped up, wagged my tail and looked my pretty most self. The lady went away and a HS staff member took me to an outside “meet area.” The lady and I sniffed a bit, fetched a bit. She smelled doggy and threw a good fetch so I thought this was a good start. Then she took me for a long walk. Weird though. Every time I started to pull to go ahead she just stopped dead till I stopped and turned to look at her. So it went: walk, pull, stop, look – repeat. I knew then I would have to rethink my pulling game.
The lady took me back to the “meet area” and went away for a bit. Then off we went in her car. First stop at an awesome new place called PC’s Pantry. Oh boy: cookies, dogs, squeak toys! A very nice lady fussed around a bit and I had a harness on, Hmmm. A bit harder to pull on than the leash. Next stop a house with lots of doggy smells and a fenced back yard. This is getting better all the time especially since I’ m NOT ever left alone on the back porch. I admit I was nervous at first out back. I’d sit by the door and whine – afraid I’d be left alone out there. Now I know when she goes in, I go in. Now I whine to go out for potty.
I have to admit that it is a wonderful life out here. The lady is almost always here so I am rarely alone. When she does leave, she gives me special chew things and squeakers in a cozy crate and she doesn’t stay away for more than an hour or so. Plus (BIG plus) every day we go to one special place or another where I can run free with other dogs. Pure Joy! I’ve met so many fun dogs: Lilly, Charlotte, Brandee, Wyatt, Ike, Moab, Provin, Henry, Maggie, Bruno, Harvey, Max, Grommet, Bishop and more. And many days one or two dogs come here to play with me.
Because I am so beautiful and fast when I run (run with the wind the lady says), she gave me a new name: MARIAH. You know the song “They Call the Wind Mariah.” Cool, huh? Also very cool – I get to sleep with the lady in her big cozy bed.
The lady says we have work to do. I already knew “sit.” We’re working on: come, down, stay, release and leave it. When I know all these I can get a green tag so we can go to a lot more fun places off leash.
And now for the win/win or, if you will the woo/woo angle. I’m a female re-incarnation of Mikado – a 14 ½ year old Doberman mix that the lady said goodbye to on Oct 5. Even to white markings on our chests. Check out the photos. Mikado and the lady met at the Boulder Valley HS when he was just 8 weeks old. Every day Mikado enjoyed his walks on open space with the lady or one of her friends. Except for his last few weeks people did not believe how old he was. The lady has not stopped missing Mikado but her mushy moments are a lot less since she got me. Mikado was sweet, smart and sassy – a real Mr. Sociable who was loved by everyone. I do have some pretty special paws to fill. He was one in a million – I am going to be two in a million. Both the lady and I know that I can’t replace Mikado. And we know that, with your help, Mikado sent me to her.
Thank you again.

I live in Wichita, but adopted two kittens from Caring Hands in Newton.
All my experiences with Caring Hands were good. The first time I went in to adopt, it
was late (15 minutes before closing) on a Saturday. The wonderful lady who stayed late
to help me didn't act at all upset that I came in so late, and spent as much time as we
needed, even implanting the chip in my kitten. She was very caring and professional.
I had to wait 2 or 3 months to adopt the second kitten because she had been left in the
bushes
outside Caring Hands, and wasn't old enough to be taken away from her mother.
An employee "fostered" her until she was big and strong enough to be adopted. Each time
I called to inquire, they remembered me, which was unusual, I thought. They have continued to follow up and offer help, more than a year after the adoptions. I would
definitely recommend Caring Hands, and all the wonderful people and pets there.
Thank you!!!

Stitch
Hi!
We just wanted to start by saying THANK YOU to you as well as all the staff at Caring Hands. You helped us find a great addition to our family. "Stitch" has truly been a joy to get to know. We adopted him in the middle of August and he has brought nothing but joy to our lives ever since. They always say that there is no "perfect dog" but Stitch has to be as close as they get. It has been a privilege watching him grow and change.
Thank you for taking him in and caring for him, for all the love and kindness that you show to the lost, lonely, and forgotten animals amongst us. Thank you for helping us through the application process; for the visitation time, helpful words of advice, and caring for Stitch until we could take him home! Caring Hands provides a great service and we appreciate the time and energy you contributed to our pet adoption as well as so many others. Thank you again!
Blessings,
Laura and Shep

Sabot
Kevin,
My name is Jenna and in August my husband and I adopted a GSP/lab mix from your shelter in Newton. I wanted to say thank you so much for all you and your staff do! We named him Sabot (pronounced sabo) and he is such a joy!
My husband will be deploying in January and he is going to be my battle buddy! He is doing wonderful! I wasn't sure how often you heard from those you save so I thought I would let you know that we all are very appreciative of what you do! I am attaching a picture but as I am sure you can imagine he is growing like a weed so he is bigger already! Thanks again!

Manson
A quick note from the webmaster:
Hi, It's Jack. Sometimes when a pet comes to a Humane Society they just need to find someone who understands them. Most of our cats are very docile and quite friendly, just waiting to find that special person. Others have coping strategies that are shall we say…more challenging…
Manson was one such cat.
All lives are precious to us. But some cats are harder to find a person who is right for them…Read on!
Kenny & Manson's Story
Hello, I wanted to send you an update on Manson and how well we are doing. Life deals us all obstacles. I am a testament to that. On December 9th 2008 I was in a very bad semi-truck wreck. My back was broken in two places and I was facing surgery to fuse 6 vertebrae.
I was living alone at the time and with not being able to work or do anything I was very bored and depressed.
But every once in a while you meet somebody and for some reason they instantly love you.
This happened to me at your facility.
I ended up at the Caring Hands Humane Society in Newton on the search for a kitten. I looked at a few kittens and I went and looked at the adult cats. I was in the market for a kitten but I figured that since I was there I would visit everybody. I walked into the adult cat room and a male tabby instantly glued himself to me. I patted him on the head and when he demanded more pets I gave him more.
Throwing caution to the wind I filled out the paperwork and told them I had to run to Wal-Mart to get cat supplies, but I would be right back.
Upon returning to the Humane Society they brought out a box and told me I was gonna want to put him in it to go home. They brought Manson out and put him in the box and taped it shut.
They carried him to my pickup and we headed home. About 5 miles into the trip the box was no match for him and he escaped. I spoke to him and he calmed right down and settled onto my lap for the rest of the ride home. We made it home and I let him in the house. He checked everything out. I fed him, showed him the water and he laid on the bed with me.
We spent the rest of the evening watching TV. I have never met a cat that would watch TV but he does.
I bought him a cat bed but he has claimed mine and stays pretty close to me. After the surgery My mom and my girlfriend moved me back to Oklahoma where I was originally from. Manson is such a huge part of my life. He is truly my buddy.
He helps make the days go by because I can not work anymore and money is tight due to being on workman's comp. Manson always listens to any of my problems and despite the language barrier between us I feel like he talks to me too. He loves his toys and I recently bought him a small r/c car that he loves to chase.
He has never shown me the side of him that earned him the name "Manson."
Jack’s Note: - That’s because you are his special person Kenny! We don’t know if you’re a cat whisperer or if it is just your special bond – but we’re glad you found each other! We were afraid Manson would take over the building…
Thank you so much for what you do. Not only did Manson need a home but I needed him. I wish I could give all of them homes, the dogs too. Keep up the good work and thanks again.
-Kenny & Manson
Jack’s note: Well dear readers, we are very grateful to Kenny! Another Happy Ending…Yes! Cat’s are as unique as people are. Whether you like Cuddle cats or Attack cats there is a cat out there for everyone. Come to Caring Hands to meet YOUR new friend!

Last April 9, my beloved Standard Poodle, Rayna, had to be sent over the Rainbow Bridge. In the past I'd always waited about two months before adopting another dog, but somehow I found myself at Caring Hands about two weeks later. I just wanted to fill out an application form and let them know I'd be interested in adopting something eventually. On the form I specified a large dog, and wrote across the bottom, "Not Yet." Incidentally, that form impressed me with its scope.
A week or so later Lori Smith called me at home and said they had a really nice Rottie Mix and would I like to come out to meet him? O.K. It was time to visit Caring Hands. I met Barney (The Rottie) in Caring Hands' visitation room.
Well, he wasn't interested in me at all, and just wanted out, so he and I found ourselves back in the hall with several members of the staff. I asked about another dog, Val I'd seen in an outside pen. "Val doesn't get along with cats." I was told. Well, I have two cats at home so that wouldn't be a good fit.
Then Mike, impulsively, said, "Bring out the Japanese Chin." I remember saying, "What on Earth is a Japanese Chin?" Someone put him in my lap and he immediately began licking my face, and I fell in love. "Can I take him home?" I asked. Not unless you adopt him!" was the reply. It was a deal, and neither of us has ever looked back.
Never having had a small dog before, I was deligted with how entertaining he is. Just moving from here to there, waving that feathery tail over his back, he looks as if he's been put here for the express purpose of cheering up everyone in his vicinity. He manages our daily two-mile walks easily, and has claimed the back yard as his own, snuffling around out there and sometimes doing a little dance, all on his own. It took a while for the cats to accept him, but all three are good friends by now. His previous owner had reported that he was used to sleeping on her bed, and he has continued that habit here. I appreciated all the information she had left with him, including his exact birth date and other habits.

Champ
My husband and I adopted Champ (formerly “Dusty”) on December 13, 2008. We brought him home that night and introduced him to his new siblings: our two Chihuahuas, Chase and Chloe; and our cat, Caysee. Champ wasn’t fazed at all!
Champ loves to wrestle with Caysee and he loves his toys. He tries very hard to win her over by cuddling with her in her kitty bed (although we don’t think she appreciates it very much). He has found his “jumping legs” and he is so proud of himself when he gets on top of our cabinets or refrigerator. Champ is a vocal little guy – he is always talking to us or purring. We love him so much and he has been such a great addition to our new family. Thank you so much for allowing us to adopt him!
Rocky
Hello CHHS,
My name is Rocky (formerly Sport) and I was adopted on July 8, 2006. My dad drove down from Kansas City to get me because I was exactly what he and Mom wanted in a puppy and they found me on Petfinder.
I have grown into quite the handsome boy! I love to follow my parents around and work/play in the yard, go on long walks, play with Clarice (my kitty sister) and my cousin Brinkley (a Doberman Pinscher who's bigger than I am), go to play time at PetSmart, and go to the lake in the summer to ride in the boat. I have my own bed in the master bedroom, but prefer to sleep belly-up on my parents' bed. I am very well-behaved and have learned lots of tricks - I'm a smart boy and learn very quickly.
I just want to thank you for taking me and my siblings in, caring for us, and getting us on the internet quickly so my parents could find me. They love me so much and can't imagine life without me. Thanks again and take care!
Sincerely,
Rocky Roosevelt

Mattie & Pancho Villa
Hi Caring Hands; I enjoy your newsletter and hope everything is going well at CHHS. I wanted to update you on Mattie and Pancho Villa.
They are doing quite well at the Lazy Creek Bar Six. The boarders love them because they are very social. They are both a bit overweight because everyone gives them food whenever the bowl is empty. However, they get lots of exercise keeping the barn free of rodents and the birds from taking over the rafters. Pancho strolls down the center of the barn with a swagger that tells anyone watching that he 'owns' the barn. They both are well-trained at patrol. Mattie has been seen chasing a rabbit off the property and she walks the rafters keeping the birds at bay when she is not busy riding shotgun on top of the hay wagon during feeding time.
They both enjoy sampling the horse feed just to make sure that it is okay to give to the horses. Since it has gotten cold they really enjoy a cup of milk warmed in the microwave. I am attaching a couple of pictures taken early fall. The cute humanoid is my G-Kid!

Pepper & Cinnamon
Hi Caring Hands! Pepper, the Alpha Female, is the mother type, gentle, caring - ALWAYS rides in the front seat of the car. The Drive through bank tellers know her. :-) She is very watchful of her family.
Cinnamon, the pack male, is quite simply the gentlest dog we have ever seen!
We have many children in our home, so dog temperment is extremely important to us. Both dogs are in excellent health and have wonderful temperments for children!

Rosey Rose
We adopted Rosey from Caring Hands on August 13th. Around the house we call her Rosey Rose or Pretty Girl. She is adjusting wonderfully. We have another dog named Ollie and he is thrilled to have an older sister. I can’t believe how well mannered and sweet Rosey is. She has been the most perfect dog ever and we fall in love her more and more everyday. She follows us around all day and always seems worried we might leave her. That is why it breaks my heart to think that she was a stray wondering around, all alone, in this
big world. It looks like Rosey was bred quite a lot, and we are excited to love her and let her enjoy living a spoiled doggie life!!
My daughter’s 3 gold fish passed away 2 days before we adopted Rosey, she was heart broken over the loss of her beloved companions. She asked me later that evening if we could look at some homeless dogs on the internet, and immediately Rosey caught our eye. My daughter and I truly believe that God knew Rosey needed us and we needed her just as much. Who would have thought that something so precious could have come out of something so sad. Rosey has made the grieving process a lot easier for our little girl. Rosey and our daughter sleep together every night and are the best of friends!! We want to praise Caring Hands for responding so quickly to us on the adoption of our sweet baby girl Rosey. Your staff made the process so easy and professional. You have truly added a pure joy to our family. Thanks for giving us a forever friend to cherish and adore!! As my sister always says, “ No house is complete, without the pitter-patter of doggy feet.”
Thanks again and best wishes!

Broc
We adopted two kittens from Kansas Humane Society in Wichita first and then, liking the Caring Hands people as I do...I wanted to adopt from them. I love the cat rooms at Caring Hands and the freedom they give the cats. If you ever adopt spend some time in the adult cat condos. The cats are awesome!
Also, think about this...Having two kittens and then later one dies and it leaves one alone but having three, one dies and there is still another friend.
So that's why I decided to go for it with #3 and these cats are all veggie cats. My daughter named two of them Coleslaw and Cauliflower but we call them Cole and Flower. Then #3 was named by a good friend of mine at Caring Hands and I liked her idea. The Caring Hands kitty is named Boccoli or Broc for short.
All the kittens are getting along just fine. Cole never tires of wrestling. Broc enjoys it too. Flower is a bit jealous of the attention Cole is giving Broc but they are more alike I guess. Flower is gentle and somewhat sassy. She likes to be held like a baby. She voices as if she says...It's my turn! Hello, I'm here! All three kittens are like ragdolls when I hold them and they purr about constantly. All the kittens are very loving!! So I thank Caring Hands that I was able to ad Broc to the family. Things are going great and none of my kittens are related!
So if you are reluctant about adopting. Try to go for it one day soon. Then you'll see all that you were missing out on was just more love!

Bruce Lee
Hi there! Hope all is well with you at the shelter. I just wanted to send ya a pic of the "little" kitten I adopted from your facility a couple of years ago. We named him Bruce Lee. He's something else. HAHA! My husband called him the don. Bruce keeps my pug and doberman in check, so all is well. Thank you for what you do. I certainly couldn't have asked for a better addition to the family.
Sincerely - Ilia

Bear
I'll never forget the heart racing excitement - I could hardly contain myself when I found out that Bear, formally Hubble, was mine to adopt!!! I had wanted a dog for so long, but apartment living made that impossible. It was August 1st, a Friday Afternoon, and I called my boss, my husband and the shelter and imformed everyone I would be leaving work early to come get him.
The staff at the Caring Hands Humane Society were so helpful and the most wonderful people you could hope to deal with. They truly do want the best for their animals, and their help and cooperation in making sure you get the animal was just amazing. I had called so many places, but never was I treated the way I was there.
Bear came home, sniffed around the yard, played a little, and then investigated his new home. He spent the next morning with his head in my lap hanging out on the couch! He was officially part of the family. He wouldn't eat at first, but after he decided what kind of food he liked and hand feedings, he's now one of the most spoiled dogs you could ever meet. He isn't our pet but our son, and he means the world to us. We love him with all of our hearts, and would do anything for him. He has been such an amazing companion when Dad works nights or is out playing Soldier. Every day when we come home he's at the top of the stairs just waiting, knowing we'll drop everything to give him a little love. He sleeps in our bed, gets love whenever he wants, and gets more treats than we do. We's so much more energized and playful since we first got him. He has deemed the left hand side of the love seat his seat and he makes sure you know if you're in his place. Yep, that's our spoiled boy!
I can't help but think "I rescued him from a shelter, and yet somehow feel like he has rescued me." Thank you so much for giving us not a pet, but a member of our family!
Alicia

Diva
My name is Icess and I adopted my awesome feline friend Diva from Caring Hands May 2007. I was on the websited when I saw a list of Happy Adopters sharing their stories.
Diva for me is a blessing. She lives up to her name so I never changed it. She loves to plop down on the floor and meow and adores sleeping in the pillow next tom the couch when we're watching tv. She's amazing and I'm thankful that she's in my life.
Hope all is well & Lots of meows,
Icess and Diva

Teddy
We'd like to thank Caring Hands for such a wonderful experience. About a month ago, my fiance and I adopted Teddy. He Definately fit the description of a cuddler. He is very well mannnered and enjoys when we take him to the ranch out in the country. Both my fiance and I were extremely impressed with the services that were provided throughout the adoption. We drove from Fort Worth and back to pick up our little buddy, and are very thankful we did.
Again, thank you Caring Hands!
Regards, Adam

Minnie
Minnie is also on our success stories page! Her guardians at her forever home kindly sent in an update for us to share. You can help animals like Minnie by donating to Tuffy's Unconditional Love Fund, formerly known as the Emergency Medical Fund.
Hi!!! We adopted Minnie back in April 2006 and she underwent her heartworm treatment very soon after she was diagnosed. Heartland Animal Hospital has monitored her health and everything looks really good!! I can honestly say I couldn't want anything more in a dog. Minnie has the perfect personality, just enough spunk but mellow enough to qualify her as a couch potato. We've let her gain some weight but just enough to where she isn't overweight. Minnie loves playing ball and she enjoys playing with our 3 year old son who just adores her.
We truly are very thankful for what you, your staff and your volunteers do. Minnie has found a a forever home!

Cleo & Twitch
These fun pictures tell the story of Cleo aka: Cleopatra (the dog) and Twitch (the cat). Cleo and Twitch get along very well, although as you can see Cleo is very camera shy. Twitch sleeps in the bed and likes to cuddle with mom. They both want you to know that everyone loves them and they love their home!

Little Foot
I just want to say thank you for such a wonderful experience at Caring Hands - truly was the best adoption experience ever!! Little Foot has fit into the family perfectly! He loves his new big brother Harvey the pit bull mix and they absolutely love to cuddle on the bed together. Little Foots favorite place to lay is on the couch on a nice soft fur blanket. He is so well-mannered and mellow that it's amazing. At night he cuddles up with me on the bed under the covers.
He's an absolute sweetie. We took him to the vet today and he got his rabies shot and city tags, I think the tags are bigger than he is!! The vet said his neutering area has healed up nicely and he's already gained a half a pound in one week. The ladies at the vet went gaga over him. He's definitely a ladies man.
Thank you for such a wonderful adoption and giving us the chance to give Little Foot a new forever home.

Nellie
Just wanted to send this picture to the Caring Hands Humane Society. It is a picture of our son with our sweet adopted cat that we named, Nelly (aka Laura). She has settled in nicely and is making herself part of the family. We could not have asked for a better family pet!
Please pass on our sincere gratitude to the helpful staff at Caring Hands, especially the young lady who trimmed Nelly's nails and did inserted the micro-chip. My husband is a night owl, and says that Nelly is a perfect late night companion. However, Nelly cannot quite "hang with him" and falls asleep in his lap!
Thanks again for providing a safe, loving start for her-Love, The Rindt Family
PS...My son wanted you to tell the long-haired cat that roams the office "hi". He still talks about how funny that cat was. He says she's the "office manager" and can do what she wants!

Queenie
Queenie is doing great. We took her and introduced her to Dr. Cindy down at Chisholm Trail. They love her too!Roger took her and had her groomed and they shaved her so that I could get her use to being brushed. She don't look like she did when we picked her up. But she will soon. She is spoiled rotten. Roger takes her walking when the weather is permitting. When we getup every morning and I have to take her out side and romp and play with her. When we come in she expects a treat.
She begs real well and sometimes she will dance on her two hind legs and I tell her we are dancing and we do patty cakes. She loves to go in and out the doggie door. Sometimes she lets us know when she wants to go outside I have to go with her so we can run and play. you would think we had little kids living here with all the toys around.
When we set down to eat supper I have to feed the two of them too. She sleeps with us. She has to come up in the bed at night and kiss us goodnight. She likes to run around the house we bought her a foot ball she likes to play with it. She also likes to play tug of war with a toy we bought. We said god blessed us with a dog that has the two traits from our other two dogs Precious the one we just lost and Wendy the one we lost a couple years back. She is quite a pleasure to both of us and Littlebit.
Thanks a bunch

Saki
I just wanted to take a minute to submit my story of adopting Saki (previously known as Pluto). I have attached several photo's so that you might have the opportunity to choose how you would like us to be displayed! I adopted Saki (previously known as Pluto) in early January and now have the best room-mate I could have ever asked for! I am 25 years-old and work for an Architecture firm. Living alone and being single has opened many doors for implementing a companion into my environment.
Saki was the best decision I could have made at this point in my life. I found him through Caring Hands Humane Society on-line and fell in love with him immediately. At the time he was in need of affection just as much as I was and I believe this is why we were an instant match...not to mention we look frighteningly similar to one another!! Saki now has his own groomer, his own side of the bed, along with pretty much anything else he wants. The apartment has become more HIS stomping grounds than mine and anybody who enters initially goes through an in-depth screening by Saki and then falls inevitibly... second.
Our favorite daily routine is making the bed. This is sometimes repeated 2-3 times throughout the day if needed to 'wear him out.' Saturday mornings consist of drinking coffee in bed together while watching the weather channel, cleaning the apartment together and of course...making the bed. He's my buddy, my pillow, my shadow, my confident, my fashion expertise before work, my companion, my personal comedian/entertainment, and my best friend!! I don't know what I would do without him.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to find one-another!!
-Jordan and Saki

Oscar
I just wanted to let you guys know that the little gray Shih Tzu I adopted yesterday, now named "Oscar", is just fitting in perfectly.
He came home and immediately jumped up on my bed and curled up on a pillow. He's definitely been a pampered pet at some time! He's as sweet as I could hope for, and he's already bonding to me! We took him to the vet yesterday and got all of his shots and HW test, and the vet loved him! He does have a retained puppy tooth that needs to come out, but that's the only problem!
Anyway-I just wanted to thank you guys for everything you do. It breaks my heart to think of little Oscar roaming the streets all alone.
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to adopt the little guy! He's just perfect!
Erika.

Murphy
He wasn’t what most people would call a beautiful cat, just rather ordinary–looking; a black and grey tiger tabby with longer than normal everything; face, legs, tail, ears. In fact, I might not have even noticed him among all the other cats in the male cat room, if he hadn’t tried to jump into my husband’s arms – from the floor. It was our 3rd trip to Caring Hands Animal Shelter in the past two weeks. After the death of my beloved cat, Oscar, a month earlier, I thought I was ready for a kitten. Oscar had been my special buddy for over 18 years and losing him was very hard.
I had no hopes that any cat would ever replace his sweet and gentle self in our home, but thought a baby kitten might be just the thing to bring some life back into the house.
Truth be told, I would have loved to take all of those hopeful, homeless cats home with me, but I knew that one more was all we would be able to add to our family of cats. There were several who tugged at my heart in a particular way, but for some reason I just couldn’t make up my mind. I was sitting down holding another cat and I guess he was determined to get some attention too. Once before we had been “chosen” by a cat at an animal shelter and he had turned out to be the smartest and most loving kitty we’d ever had, so I thought that was a good sign.
After holding him on my lap for awhile, and seeing how much he enjoyed cuddling and being held, we made our decision that he was the one we would take home. He wasn’t a baby kitten (about 9 months old), but was still young enough to have the playfulness we wanted in a new cat. So I carried him to the staff to let them know who we had chosen and they told me about his history.
He had been adopted from Caring Hands some months earlier, but had been returned to the shelter when either he or another cat in the house started marking inappropriately. Now what was I going to do? I had already looked him in the eye and promised him that he was going to have a new home with me and my husband. And we already had other cats at home. Would he feel threatened and make a mess at our house? I knew what a problem that could be, especially in a house with multiple cats. But I had already promised him, and knowing he had already been sent back once before, I just couldn’t deny him a second chance. Plus I knew that most people, knowing his history, wouldn’t give him a chance at all.
So we filled out the paperwork and made arrangements with our vet to have him checked out before taking him home. They couldn’t see him until the next day, so he would have to spend one more night at the shelter. The next day we took him for his checkup and found he was healthy except for a bad case of fleas. The vet recommended that in addition to a bath and flea medication, we leave him at the animal hospital for several days to make sure all the fleas were dead before taking him into the house. Those were three of the longest days of my life.
When we finally got to bring him home, we had to decide on a name. His name from the shelter was “Vance” but I didn’t care for the name and he didn’t seem particularly fond of it either since he never responded to it. After spending a whole afternoon with him, playing, napping and snuggling, I decided that he was a “Murphy.”
So, to make an already long story short, Murphy has become a wonderful addition to our home. He is very easy-going and gets along wonderfully with our other cats. When I’m home, he follows me around the house and when I work on the computer, he sits right beside the keyboard and takes special delight in hitting the Escape key. One of his jobs is retrieving the labels as they come out of the label printer on the desk. At night he shares my pillow, although he’s a bit of a pillow hog and ends up with it all to himself by morning.
I’m so thankful for the wonderful folks at Caring Hands who make it possible for these animals to get a chance for a loving home. And I want to encourage folks who may be thinking of adopting a pet to not hold an animal’s history against them and to not always just look for the most beautiful animal. The homely and average ones might just love you the most. Because now, to me, Murphy is the most beautiful cat in the whole world.
LuAnn.

Kansas
We adopted Kansas (formerly known as Darla) on Friday, 12-16-05. We are so happy with this puppy, she is everything we wanted and hoped for. She was definitely worth the drive to get!
We would personally like the thank Dee and the staff at Caring Hands for going above and beyond the call of duty for this adoption. We live in Wisconsin (700 miles and 11 hours away). We could not visit the shelter ahead of time to meet this wonderful creature. Dee and the staff were very accommodating and answered our emails quickly.
They answered all of our questions and performed all the "tests" of her for us. They did it all willingly and quickly. We were overwhelmed with their helpfulness and consideration. They made our adventure absolutely worthwhile! Our friends and families still think we are crazy for driving that far for "a dog". But we knew she was worth it, especially after all the assistance everyone at Caring Hands had given us.
Kansas, appears to be loving her new home and family. The boys love her already and our other pets have adapted to her quickly. She is so well behaved. And surprising of all, she loves the snow. She bounces around in it and has a great time. Steve plowed part of the yard to make it easier for her and her short legs but she prefers to play in the deep snow.
Thank you again for making this all possible! We can never thank you enough for all the help you gave us. She is definitely worth the trip to Kansas!
Sincerely, Lisa & Steve Hoff

Jenny
We adopted Jenny from CHHS in June of 2005. Once we heard her story we knew she needed to be in a loving home like ours. When Jenny was found as a stray she had a rubber band wrapped around her lower jaw and it had cut through to the bone. The wonderful people at CHHS got her the vet care she needed and got her well on her way to healing.
We came in looking for a family dog, and saw Jenny and heard about her story. We have two small children and we took her back to the visitation room to get acquainted with our boys. She did great! She was so polite and friendly we knew she was the dog for us! We weren't able to take her home that night and I could barely stand the thought of her not coming home with us, but we came back to get her the next morning.
She loved the car ride home and spent most of the morning exploring her new home. We were pleasantly surprised that she appeared to be housetrained and we haven't had any accidents with her since she came home. She also rarely barks! but loves to play ball with the boys. She is so gentle with them, in fact my youngest learned to stand hanging on to her back. She is such a great dog and a wonderful addition to our family. She hates to be alone so are adopting another dog to keep her company. We are so happy with our Jenny, we can't imagine life without her!

Timber
My best friend knew that I had always wanted a German Shepherd, but due
to circumstances I was unable to have one. So on my 40th birthday, she and
my wonderful boyfriend got together and decided to get me one. They knew
that I would rather adopt a pet from a shelter rather than buy one through a
breeder. They found Timber at the Caring Hands Humane Society in
Newton, Ks. (His name was Bandit there).
Can you imagine my surprise when my best
friend pulled up in my driveway on my birthday with a beautiful German
Shepherd puppy!!! I was thrilled.
Timber is now a beautiful, BIG (100 lb.) bundle of joy. We recently got a new puppy to add to our family and Timber is so
protective of her that he won't let our other 2 dogs get near her. He has assumed the responsibility of being our puppy's babysitter. I couldnt
have asked for a better dog.
I love him dearly.

Cisco
Cisco was our New Year’s Baby! We got him December 31st, 2005! My son and daughter found him on the internet and we just had to have him! Lucky for us no one had adopted him over Christmas, which we couldn’t believe since we think he’s just a beautiful boy and even though he had been running a fever we had to take him home then! He was fine when we got him home though! Cisco is the name given to him by the shelter, but it fit him so well that we left it as is!
He loves our fenced in yard and he’s the typical rambunctious puppy, but we wouldn’t trade him for anything! He could use a good dose of obedience training, but we’ve already taught him to fetch, shake hands, and sit (which apparently means roll over to him!) and we’re still working on more commands! But most importantly he house broke so fast! He’s definitely a smart guy!
You know, there’s some people who wouldn’t waste there time at a shelter or on any type of dog that’s not a pure bred, but I’ll take my mutt over any pure bred! He’s the best! Thanks, Caring Hands!!!
Sincerely,
Kory, Jennifer, Bryce and Morgan Barber

Henry
Dear Caring Hands Humane Society,
We adopted a little brindle Scottish Terrier from you in December. We named him Henry. He is the sweetest, funniest, and best Christmas gift we’ve ever received! He is loving his new home, and getting along really well with our cat (we also rescued from T.Russell Reitz Animal Shelter in Manhattan, KS) Dave.
At first, Dave hid from Henry for the first week or so…but now they “play” and wrestle for a good percentage of the day. Henry prefers sleeping in his kennel we bought him. He just outgrew his first kennel and is now loving his much more spacious one. We’ve taken him to the vet in Hesston and he’s received all of his shots and heartworm medicine. Henry enjoys looking at his reflection in his water bowl and then pawing at it, and dipping both paws waaay into the water. He also enjoys growling at all of his stuffed toys. Our favorite thing he does is tilt his head way up high and let out a high pitched “whooooo” when there is a CD playing in the house. It’s adorable. Attached is pictures of Henry with us, and also sitting in the rocking chair with his new “brother” Dave.
Thank you so much for all you do for these animals. We love Henry so much! If possible, can you let the people that gave Henry (previously Farley) to Caring Hands know that he is in great hands?? Thank you so much!

Beatrice
I just wanted to let you know that my kitty, Beatrice, who I adopted at the end of January is a wonderful companion. Beatrice is playful and loving. She loves to be with people and makes guests in my home her guests, too. She welcomes them and makes friends immediately. After I had to have my almost 18-year old cat, Buster, put to sleep last June I had decided not to get another pet. It is just too hard to let them go. My neighbors kept encouraging me to go the Humane Society and look. I had in mind that I would get a calico, but not so. When I went into the room with the adult cats Beatrice found me, purred and stayed with me while I looked. I could not leave her, she chose me and I'm so glad she did.
I would encourage anyone who is looking for a pet to go to the Humane Society. There are so many wonderful pets that would love to have a home.
Thank you.
Virginia

Jackie
I have to tell you about Jackie. We adopted him as a companion for my Fox Terrier, Burton, because I was getting so ill that I could not play much with Burton anymore. I wanted him to do something besides lay around with me all the time.
When Jackie came to live with us, he was very nervous, but extremely loving and he melted our hearts.
I was concerned about several things, though. The first of which was that I could not reach out to pet him without him jumping back like he was
anticipating a blow rather than a pat. The second of which was that he was not comfortable enough to eat. He would take a small bite of food then immediately jump back as if he were anticipating someone pulling his bowl away. The third item that captured my deepest sympathies was the fact that he had suffered with extreme allergies all of his life and had been medicated for the same, but had never been tested to ascertain his specific needs and to treat the same.
With all the trips that Jackie made to the vet for allergy problems combined, he could have been treated for his specific problems.
I started allergy testing with our veterinarian, the serum has finally made it here, but the veterinary office that I use has relocated and increased its clientele base to the point that I cannot get Jackie in to get his first shot!!! I plan to give him the injections after that, but they have to ensure against anaphylactic reactions the first time and wish to observe him. I am still pursuing this, but am frustrated.
In the mean time, I have loved Jackie up so much that he is a constant wagging tail. He has slipped back into puppy hood and I have to
constantly provide for his gnawing needs or face the destructiveness that some puppies exhibit. I get him a lot of squeaky toys so that
when he's happy, he goes around squeaking his toys. I'll tell you what, we hear a lot of squeaking around here and it just reassures
me that we have a contented dog. He also sometimes just lays on our bed and can only seem to move his eyes, but not his body
because he is in such a state of happiness and contentment. I look at him at these times and he just seems to say with his eyes,
"Thank you momma, for loving me." I feel so blessed, then. He is such a little ball of love. We have developed a routine to deal with
some of his allergy issues... I try to keep the yard as dandelion free as possible, we start off the day with him soaking his feet in the tub (he was constantly licking his feet, that was the main issue of his allergies). While he is in the tub, I gently remove the build-up in his eyes with the water (he gets a lot of gunk in his eyes and a tissue is too coarse). I almost never see him licking his feet, now, and his eyes are usually clear throughout the remainder of the day. We talk to Jackie as if he were a little baby and he practically licks my face off when he is felling ornery.
We all (me, my husband, Burton and our five-month-old domestic gray medium haired kitten who weighs over five pounds and is not fat, who is Jackie's bestest friend) have developed a deep love for this extra special dog.
I am eternally grateful to the previous owners and Caring Hands for allowing me the opportunity to have Jackie as a part of my blessed life.
My Sincerest Gratitude,
Ava V. Anderson-Kemper

Ollie
Hello! I'm Oliver (Ollie)! My old owners took me to Caring Hands because after 6 years of my long and beautiful hair they were finally sick of having the sneezies!! I wasn't too happy with going, but everyone there is so nice, so I was ok after awhile. Then one day this new girl started working there and she took one look at me and fell in love (of course!!) I don't know why she took so long to take me home, but she said she had to make sure I used the litter box right (duh, Mom, why wouldn't I??) and that I was nice, not just a pretty
face. It took her TWO WEEKS to make sure!! Doesn't one look...the very first look tell you anything? She just didn't get it that I'M PERFECT.
On the 14th day, she brought in her whole family! She did not, however, bring with her or even MENTION she has horse sized dogs!! So neither of us knew I'd have some initial shock once I arrived at my new home. My new mom is so nice! She spoils me rotten with tummy scratches (and I don't even get frisky, in fact, sometimes I roll off her lap because it feels so good! Mom jumps when I get my grasp, though. She said her legs aren't ladders, whatever that means. She said it hurts. I don't know what that means either. All I care about is that she lets me stay on her lap, even after she lets me climb back up and she keeps on scratching me! I give her a LOT of kisses and nips when she stops petting me. She immediately starts scratching again! I've got her well trained!! She gives me a LOT of yummy wet cat food! I love that stuff!! Of course, being a 14 pound little guy, I eat my dry food, too. She's kind of bad about making me eat 'the healthy stuff', though. Oh well...still tastes good! I LOVE my food!
Mom has this really pretty girl cat, but I haven't seen her since the first day I came home. I have seen the 'horse dogs', though. She thinks THEY are big, but when I fluff up and chase them out of the room with my big claws, I AM BIGGER! Hah! BUT...she keeps making me hang out with them and be nice. They aren't as bad as I thought anymore...but I still prefer to be alone with my family scratching me. I don't have time to be bothered with big gray dogs. I have lots of naps to take! I'm REALLY glad they took me home with them!! I'm so happy and content! I like to tell them that, but they seem to only want to speak gibberish to me. Sometimes I think I know what Mom is saying, but don't tell her that.
Thank you everyone at Caring Hands for introducing me to my new Mommy, Daddy, brother and sister--even the big grey horse dogs!! They are SO GREAT!! I love them a whole lot!!
Love, Ollie (Oliver)

Bear
Upon receiving Bear we decided to change her name from Darla to Bear. She just looked so much like a bear to us.
She is doing great! We go on hour long walks everyday when the weather is nice and at least 30 minute walks when it’s cold. Bear loves the snow and was always out playing in it. It didn't take long to potty train her either. She always runs for her leash or goes to the door when she has to go out. She knows how to sit on command and we are still working on shake.
We are just in love with her and are very happy she is part of our family now.
Joshua and Chelsea.

Dutchess
We adopted Dutchess Oct.13th 2006. We decided to get another dog so that Jake, our other outside dog wasn't so lonely. We went to visit Caring Hands, and saw Dutchess. She stole our hearts. When we walked up to her we knew she was the one we were going to get.
She is very playful. She likes to tease us and play ball. Her favorite thing to do is bark at squirrels all day. She loves her treats. She hides them for when she is ready for them. She loves when the kids run and play with her. Chelsey was so happy when she found out that we were going to go out to Caring Hands to adopt a dog. She told us which ones would be good for Jake, since she has worked out there for awhile now. She would want us to adopt more if we could. Chelsey loves all of her animals. We added Dutchess to our family of 1 cat, 1 hamster, Jake our outside dog and Maci our little Pug.
We are very happy to have Dutchess!!

Ty
Ty became a part of my family back in September 2006. I was so nervous when I found out that I wasn't the only one interested in adopting him. I called the humane society and they told me that I could go out and pick him up anytime. I was SO excited! My dad brought him home and everything was great. I showed him around the house and showed him my room (which became our room). I introduced him to my dad's cat which is about a 15lb cat. What's funny is that the cat is afraid of my little 4lb boy. He thinks that when the cat comes around, he's trying to attack me. Ty thinks he's a guard dog.
I've taught him to go outside with me without a leash. One time, he went right across the street because the neighbor was taking her trash out. He thought he was protecting me. He's such a loveable sweetheart and everyone loves him and is jealous that I have him. People will joke around all the time that they're gonna take him home.
But he has become so close to me that he cries when I leave even if it's just for a minute. If he's going to take a nap or something he has to be either right next to me to cuddle with or at least in the same room. When we go to bed, he has to stay up and make sure that I'm gonna lay down with him and that I'm not going to leave him. Anytime I walk around the house or at my mom's house, he feels like he HAS to follow me. It's absolutely adorable.
He's learned who grandma and grandpa are (my mom and dad) and he kind of knows who tia is (my sister) and he knows me as momma or mommy. Even with his weak back legs (one is twisted at the knee cap), he loves to run around the house, jump on furniture, and play just like any other dog. I've taught him "let's go downstairs" "let's go upstairs" "who's here?" "let's go!"and if my dad's home and we're going upstairs to see him, I'll as him "where's grandpa?" and he'll run upstairs and search everywhere until he finds him. When I tell him "let's go!" he automatically thinks that it refers to a car ride (which he loves) In the past year, Ty has become accustomed to many nicknames. The ones he recognizes the most is Ty, Tybo, bubba, baby boy and even sweetie pie. He's such an amazing dog and I feel so happy to have him in my life. He turned six on September 12 and I can't wait to share many more birthdays, christmas', and overall years with him.
I wanna thank Caring Hands for allowing me to adopt Ty into my life.

Ace & Leo
I have to share my story of my two wonderful boys. To begin, I already had one cat at home and he was starting to act depressed and wouldn’t play even though he was still a kitten, so I pondered the thought of getting him a play-mate. My husband and I searched and searched for the right kitten for us and I came across a posting for this little white kitten with a blue eye and a green eye. I had previously called to ask about his attitude towards animals and people and he seemed like a good kitten to check out.
Caring Hands has an acquaintance room so I could bring my dog and cat to check how this kitten would interact with our animals. The kitten with the blue eye and green eye who was named “Spot” was brought out and he did extremely well, he wanted to play with our dog and was not afraid of our other cat, plus he was playful and loving. We wanted to check other kittens personalities to insure we were making the best decision since we would care for an animal for its entire life. An entire litter of two girls and one boy, the brother and sisters of the kitten I was looking at were brought into the room and the other little boy named “V8” jumped right out and starting licking me and did exactly what his brother did, he played with the dog and wasn’t afraid of our cat (our cat wasn’t exactly friendly since he had to ride in a car and be confined in a room he didn’t know).
The two brothers were adorable and I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do, so of course Caring Hands informed me of a special to get two kittens! Low and behold I got two kittens. It is special since they are brothers and have each other, but they have another dog and cat to play with and they are doing awesome! Our older cat takes care of the kittens and acts as surrogate father and now that they are bigger everyone is starting to wrestle around. It is one big happy family at our home. The names didn’t quite fit them so the kitten with the blue eye and green eye is “Ace” and the kitten with the flame point markings is “Leo.” I have been extremely pleased with Caring Hands Humane Society and I couldn’t have asked for better animals.
Thank You!

Miles
Miles is getting very big, (as you can see) but he is also very smart. His favorite game, hands down, is tug of war. He also likes to play fetch, running in figure 8's when you act like you are going to get him and we are working very hard on new tricks. He is very good with, sitting, laying down, shaking (left and right), staying still needs a little work but hes getting it. Eddie taught him to be a Jack in the Box, which means he will tell him to sit then lay down, then he says READY.
Miles gets ready and Eddie says Jack in the Box and Miles will jump up in the air. Its really cute.
He is doing much better when we go on walks, he did not like a leash when we first started. As far as going bye bye he is still a little scared of it. He has to sit on your lap (not so safe) but he shakes because he is scared. So we only go a block or two then come home. I think once he realizes we will always come back home he will be ok with it.
Anyways, I can't think of anything else. Oh he is finally potty trained, I think, still not trusting him to be free by himself in the house, but it has been 2 weeks since the last accident. Thanks to everyone at Caring Hands and Melinda and her family for blessing us with such a wonderful addition to our family. I will bring him by in person probably next year when it warms up again, he should be a better passenger by then.

Annie (aka Angel)
This is Annie (aka Angel); I’m an older yellow Lab who was adopted from Caring Hands Humane Society in September of 2007. My new Mommy received an e-mail with a picture of me and she knew because of my age it would be hard for me to find a home so I wanted to tell you how I am doing. My new Mommy and family love me very much! Because of this love I have become so playful and have lost some weight, my coat is clean and shiny and my ears which I used to have a lot of trouble with are cleaned every few days.
Ohh that feels so good, I even had my teeth cleaned, I must say I am a rather good looking dog. I have a sister named Roxy, she is younger than I but bigger we have a lot of fun together. We have a big yard to play in but only go out to potty and play, this how it should be when you are a part of a family. I sleep in my own kennel at night or if I just need to get away from all of the day care kids my Mommy looks after, she is so wonderful that way! I love my naps and am really good about going to bed when my Mommy tells me to, I know she will have a good treat and sometimes she gives me one just for looking sweet. I had to learn not to jump on the furniture but I am a fast learner and try hard to please my Mommy.
I have a fun family, there is a boy in my house who is 2 ½ years old and he loves me very much. I like to give him lots of kisses. There is also a 17 year old girl and of course my Mommy and Daddy too. In addition to Roxy there are also 3 cats. My Mommy volunteers for the humane society in Wichita and she is always bringing home new friends for me to play with, right now I have a doggy friend named Blade who is a 1 ½ year old black Lab. I like to bark at the kittens she brings home but I never try to bite them I just want to see what they do because everyone is my friend. I tricked Mommy because I didn’t bark the first 2 months I lived here (tee hee hee). I come when I am called, walk well on a leash, learned to heal, wave, high five, and lay down on command. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks! I am so amazing, my family is very happy I came to live with them and I am so happy the nice people at Caring Hands gave me a chance to find my new Mommy!
Mommy changed my name to Annie and I took to Annie right away, she says she named me that because I was dumped outside when my other family moved away.
Sincerely Annie (aka Angel)

Angel (Update)
This is Annie (aka Angel)again; It's been awhile since I last emailed you, so I thought I'd give you and update about me. I'm doing very well. As you can see from my pictures, I'm very happy and will do anything to pleae my family. My favorite thing to do is chase bubbles. My mommy says I act like a puppy when the bubbles come out. It's great exercise too!
I love to play dress up. I can make anything look good!
I just celebrated one year with my new family, and I'm very happy. I was an older gal when I was adopted. I'm very thankful that I am being taken care of and have a new lease on life, as well as the opportunity to live out my remaining days with a family who loves me.
I still have chronic ear infections, but my mommy is very careful to check and treat my ears every day. My ears were permanently scarred before from not having them treated when needed. Now, they feel so much better! I couldn't ask for a fuller life. Thank you to all of you at Caring Hands for making sure I found a new family who loves me very much!!
Much Love - Angel

Mr. Cat
A year after losing our cat Toby I did not think I would ever want another cat. My daughter and I are actually both allergic to them but every time we see a cat or video with a cat I was longing for another one. So the Friday before Easter my husband and I decided to drive to Caring Hands to take a look. We were actually after a Manx - the only kind of cat I have ever owned. But when we walked into the male cat room Mr. Cat as he was known there came running to us.
He stretched his front legs up ours and starting rubbing his paws on us just like my Toby used to do to everyone he met. I knew in that instant that he was the cat for us. He is still warming up to both of our dogs. My basset hound runs from him but the lab really wants to make friends as you will see in the picture. Max as he is now known at our house has taken over the basement with our son and they are great buds now.
I highly recommend anyone longing for an animal to first visit the shelters in there local area before going anywhere else!! Thank you so much for all the help you gave us when we came in. We will definitely be back in the future.
The Clines.

Buddy
Buddy Stein Ryel, approximately 95 in human years, died May 1, 2008 under a lilac bush in his front yard. Suspected cause of death was a heart attack brought on by chasing wascally wabbits.
Buddy was adopted May 24, 1997 from Caring Hands Humane Society in Newton, KS. He graduated at the top of his obedience class & went on to become the supervisor of his own 5 acre estate. He was a self-employed guard dog who heroically defended his family against marauding coyotes. In his free time, he loved riding in his Momma’s car and going to visit his Grandpa.
In addition to his parents & indulgent grandpa, survivors include step-brother Winston, and Munchie the cat.Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Caring Hands Humane Society.

Dottie
I just wanted to let you know how well Dottie is doing at our house. We have a fenced back yard with three trees in view of a lake. She loves pointing the birds that frequent our trees and lake. After about a week and a half, she finally started playing with our four month old puppy, Tessa.
They have become best friends. After two weeks she picked up a toy for the first time. I don’t think she had ever had one. She particularly loves my husband, who she follows around the house whenever she is in. And she loves going on long walks with me. She walks well on a lease, and she has never had an “accident” in the house. I just can’t put into words how much we enjoy watching her grow emotionally and physically.
Thanks so much for taking in animals such as Dottie. She really deserves a second chance at happiness.
Linda

Holly
Holly joined our family on May 26, 2007. She was welcomed by her new big brother Zeus, a rescued Weimaraner, who very much needed a friend to wrestle with. Holly quickly discovered that she really loves kitties! She frequently is caught kissing Charlie and Nugget, her feline brother and sister. She even adores her mom's pet rat, Moo Cow. Holly is always ready to love anyone and everyone who walks into her life, whether human or animal.
Her favorite activities are playing in the hose and fetching tennis balls in the backyard. Holly would live outside if she could, but her mom wouldn't be able to sleep at night without her cuddling in bed. Holly is the completing piece to our crazy animal-loving puzzle and we couldn't live without her!
Thank you!
